[classy=two] APPEARANCE With six feet of solid muscle on a solid frame (although his shoulders look a little thin), an expression that looks as if he is constantly alpha-male posturing, bear-paw hands with thick knuckles, and a rather practical way of dressing (and, well, the lean form of a scyther at his side), Iudicael looks like a surly man, a closed-off man who wouldn't know what "feelings" were if they slapped him across the face with a wet fish. Three main scars adorn his face; one cuts across the middle of his forehead, a thin pinkish line against his dark, weathered skin, curving slightly around his temple. The other two are next to each other, starting at his left cheekbone and trailing almost straight down, dipping into his collarbone before fading away. His mouth is set in an almost-permanent frown and his brows reflect that, either set straight or pushed together, creating wrinkles and darkened his gaze a little bit. It's a bit of a pity, too, because he's got a set of blue eyes that could actually qualify as devastatingly cute if he stopped furrowing his brow--but that doesn't seem to be happening any time soon. His nose is ridiculously, surprisingly straight--surprising in the fact that a body would think that is unmarred shape would have been ruined by now, either broken, removed, or otherwise scarred. His face is clean-shaven, although if he ever grew a beard, one would do well to think that it would be the same black color as his hair, which is short and practical save for two thin braids on the left side, just in front of his ear, that reach a little below his chin. Quite probably unintentionally, this can draw attention to his rather prominent adam's apple, sticking out from the skin of his throat in an obvious manner, clearly bobbing up and down as he swallows food or talks or breathes, really. Not that one would easily be able to catch him talking, or at least running his mouth like some other characters are wont to do. Still, it isn't exactly difficult to catch him saying a few words here and there in his slightly raspy voice, quiet and measured and slow. Normally, Iudicael isn't seen in the camps at all; he is often out of the immediate vicinity of the village, gathering what needs to be gathered. When he is "socializing", there's no pattern--he doesn't specifically stick to the edges of the crowds, and he doesn't appear to be drawn to the center of attention or anything in between. He appears to... exist. Of course, his pok?mon companions are almost always at his side, sometimes napping, sometimes bugging Iudicael, and sometimes chasing each other around in mock-play while he watches them with something close to indulgence, with something close to a smile on that grumpily impassive face of his. PERSONALITY It isn't that he's an unkind man; for those who have the privilege of knowing him, it's quite the opposite. The problem lies in the fact that he has about three facial expressions and they all appear to convey some sort of irritation or dissatisfaction with the world at large around him--or, at best, complete boredom. It looks like he knows the theory behind a smile, but has never really put it to practical use. Which isn't true, but that isn't the point--it doesn't have to be. Iudicael is the sort of man who likes to keep things simple. He can deal with and comprehend complicated issues, but they're tedious and annoying and most days he'd rather do something more physical than just think, which is all the "hard" problems in life seem to make him want to do. The first few times, perhaps, it was okay, but after that Iudicael has always wondered if his life was doing all these things to him on purpose--not that he'd ever voice the concern out loud. It's petty, for one, and a trivial complaint when he's hunting for his tribe or scurrying around the camp as they prepare to move once more. What his face doesn't show, his actions do for him. He helps around the camps when he can and whenever he's approached for advice (which is more than he's comfortable with), the hunter offers counsel as best as he can muster. He's unapologetically blunt (the source of his discomfort with advice-dispensing) and never looks more helpless as when the recipient starts to blubber or cry. Anger and frustration he knows how handle, but everything else is touch-and-go. But he does his best, really, because he cares for the people around him; Iudicael simply finds it difficult to express via facial language. He knows what it's like when the world hurts, and while he doesn't want to pull punches (because the world won't, either), he refuses to be cruel without reason. Perhaps the blunt words come from his line of work and his lifestyle, for he lives to get things done and then get out. One thing at a time, sparing no corners without proper motivation. Iudicael Markovic Gets Things Done and he's actually a little proud of the fact; Getting Things Done is simple, after all. And he likes simple because simple is easy. He'd like more "easy" in his life. Of course, that isn't how things work, or else he would be a much different person. More aware of personal bubbles, for one; sometimes he realizes that he's approaching the edge of someone's personal bubble, but more often than not he will blow past it like it isn't even there, leaning in and shrugging off accidental body contact. Being uncomfortable has been a luxury he hasn't been allowed much, and he finds it all-too-easy to forget that others might value it highly--cold nights and thin resources were a large part of his past, and not readily shucked off like old skin. Other than that, he has a lot of problems with repeating himself, especially if it's more than two or three times. In some ways, he gets confused at the way people just don't seem to understand the words that come out of his mouth--as far as he's concerned, he's said this already. Why would anyone need to hear it again? (Sometimes it dawns on him that maybe this is why he's so uncomfortable with giving advice--people seem to need it again and again and again. Most of the times he's too busy to think about that sort of thing, though.) HISTORY: Iudicael Maedoch Markovic grew up too young. Life in the Zenar tribe is not always easy, after all--they do not always wander to places aplenty and the places they wander to do not always have kind and cautious pok?mon to make the gathering easier. The spirits do not always look down with generosity in their hearts. And starvation is a very powerful motivator. So is the cold, when it wracks a body's bones and makes them so cold the muscles can't be bothered to shiver. So are the weeks when water rations are necessary, when what precious little liquid there is is brown and murky, but the family units are so thirsty that it hardly matters. (It's why he is a Hunter, now. He will not starve nor let the people and companions around him starve if he can absolutely help or prevent it.) Perhaps when he was too small to toddle, to look beyond himself, he was a child of easy laughter and easy smiles, appropriate for a time where easy happiness was commonplace. His mother seems to remember his younger years as such--Iudicael allows her this, because she cannot have that now. But it's hard to regress when one has grown and gone on to see too much; forgetting only goes so far, so he has never tried. It's easy to not try, and Iudicael has so very little that is "easy." He meets his first companion when he is fourteen. There is a horrendous heat wave sweeping through the plains they are traversing, and there is sand covering things sand was never meant to cover. Water is not yet scarce but paranoia tells the Zenar people to hoard it anyway. He does not complain, even when his belly pinches every time he moves and the waterskin at his side seems to whisper in his ear. It's nothing new, and while time does nothing to dull how unpleasant the situation is, his willpower is nothing if not unshakeable. He hasn't been an adult for almost a year and it isn't because the people who decide that sort of thing are lenient and silly--he works just as hard as anyone else, even if, for now, he's stuck with the simple jobs. Long-fingered hands (because at fourteen he hadn't even begun to grow into his oversized extremities, hands and feet and ears and nose and throat too big for his little, lanky body) grip the handle of the water bucket as he walks. It's normally the hunter's job, of course, but there are more important things for them to look at right now, and the current camp is situated especially close, practically five minutes away. No one sees any harm in sending out this solidly dependable boy to fetch an extra bucket for the benefit of the tribe. When he reaches the destination, there is a scyther (female, from the size of the abdomen) lying near the edge of the pool. Iudicael considers his options. One: Scyther do not have a lot of meat on them. Bug pok?mon rarely do--the best source of food would be the tail end, where most of the body fat is stored in such a creature anyway. Still, it would hardly be worth the effort of retrieval. Two: Of course, that brings up the second point--the blades. He is fourteen and his only weapon on-hand is his knife and his mind, and neither of them do much against a pok?mon that has the potential to be highly aggressive. If he could take down the creature, the blades could be harvested as a prize, but that is a pretty hefty if. Three: She has already noticed him. And she is not doing anything about it, only staring at him with calm black eyes. His element of surprise is gone, so Iudicael didn't see the point in attacking the scyther, especially since the scyther was not inclined to attack him. He was here for water, anyway, not heroics--so he dips his head a little bit in respect to the fellow living creature, creeps cautiously closer to the pool, and dips his bucket in, scooping up the slightly dusty water without discrimination. Water was water, as long as it wasn't liable to make the drinker sick. The sycther is at his side--Iudicael jumps. The scyther tilts her head at him and does nothing, only holds his eyes. Iudicael begins to slowly back away, water bucket carefully gripped in his hands. She follows him all the way home, and tears down the side of his tent when he tries to lock her out, so he names her "Geneovefa" and she makes satisfied noises at him when he calls her that. It is the beginning of a beautiful friendship, and even though she's absolutely a dork when he gets to know her, he is glad that something about him and something about her compelled them to become companions. They are together when he becomes a hunter (sixteen) and every day afterward; she does not leave his side, and he does not leave hers. (Lugh has to wait his turn until Iudicael is almost twenty-two; he accidentally saves the young chicklet by offering shelter and food from his own scarce rations to a hungry and terrified, newly-hatched pok?mon. Geneovfa dotes on the creature and the only reason she doesn't mope when Iudicael tells her that they can't keep her is because she is too busy making friends with the Rufflet using her as a playground. Also, she has that look in her eye that tells Iudicael that he has no choice in the matter; he has never had a choice in the matter.) Iudicael Maedoch Markovic has grown up too young and he does not know how to go back to what he once was, but it's no longer a problem because he's definitely okay with the way things have gone so far, and he looks to the future and feels ready to take on the next day. (That does not mean that there are no uncertainties in his heart. There always will be--but they will come to resolution in their own time.) [/classy] |
